Bio

Timothy Amalavage-Smith (b. 1997) received his Bachelor of Music in Music Composition from The University of Alabama (2019), where he studied with Amir Zaheri, and Master of Music in Composition at the University of Louisville (2021), studying with Marc Satterwhite. He recently completed his Doctor of Musical Arts degree at The University of Alabama (2024) with Amir Zaheri.

Throughout his career, he has earned recognition for his compositions in a variety of prestigious festivals and competitions. In 2014, he was selected as a winner for the Tennessee Valley Music Festival Composer’s Forum. His work gained further acclaim when pieces were premiered at the Dance Alabama Film Festival in both 2018 and 2019, with the latter festival honoring him with the Best Score award. His music continued to reach new audiences, being featured at the Alabama Screendance Festival in 2020. That same year, his talent was acknowledged with the selection of his winning piece in the Huntsville Master Chorale’s Composition Competition. In 2021, he was chosen as the recipient of the Huang Family Composition Commission, and in 2023, he won the Alabama Orchestra Association’s Composition Competition and was a finalist of the 2023 American Prize in Shorter Choral Composition.

Amalavage-Smith has had pieces performed by the University of Alabama Singers, the University of Alabama Contemporary Ensemble, Twickenham Winds, Louisville University Symphony Orchestra, the Brass Band of Huntsville, and the University of Alabama Opera Theatre. His biggest inspirations have always been nature and other art forms.
